Washable and durable – is cotton my only option? I am not looking for synthetics. I would think wools are scratchy and not able to go in the wash? What other options are natural. What cotton weaves or blankets would be softest?
I would do cotton but haven’t found one very soft compared to polyester and acrylic.

If you don’t want cotton, try bamboo. It is soft and better for the environment. Pottery Barn and PB Outlet have a lot of the organic blankets.
sheepskin? I never thought about that- hope it’s not really sheep skin… but my dogs love their “fake” sheepskin blankets.
Try bamboo, wool, cotton, silk is pretty natural i think…not 100% but still
Alpaca wool is one of the softest, however it does require dry cleaning since it is an animal fiber. Although not looking for synthetics several microfiber blankets are very soft. Cotton can be hard to find in soft weaves, or thick/warm blankets. Cotton knit can be very soft. Sheep wool can be soft, but typically requires dry cleaning in non brushed form, which is the scratchy kind. One of the softest and warmest blankets I have is actually my old military issue pancho liner, however it is synthetic.
Believe it or not- bamboo! My friends son is really allergic to everything- except bamboo- his blankets are sooooo soft!
We have five of these and they are extremely soft and very warm they are called mink blankets. I have had one since I left Korea in 1981 and its still soft and durable. And they come in all kinds of different designs and colors Hope this helps
