My daughter knitted a beautiful baby blanket with wool yarn for her 1st baby. In the past she always washed it on delicate and hung or laid it to dry. While she was in the hospital giving birth to her 2nd son, her dad was trying to help and do laundry for her. He put the blanket in the dryer and it shrunk to about 1/3 the size. She was heart broken about this because she wanted to use it for the new baby too. Is there any way to get this back to original size or at least close to it?

The only thing i can think of is to wash it on a cool wash and put LOADS of fabric softener in and leave it to soak for a while, then dry as a delicate.
It may soften it, even if it is still smaller than in the beginning.
Apart from that, I dont know….good luck.

It may be possible to re-shape it if you first leave it to soak in a VERY strong solution of fabric conditioner for a while, then gently stretch it on a flat surface to keep the edges square.

Take the blanket to the cleaners and tell them what happened. Then ask them if you can have the blanket blocked. Not all knitting patterns can be blocked. Patterns stitches such as cables, ribbing, or any raised stitch can not be blocked. You will also need to know what type of yarn was used, if it was acrylic it can not be blocked because acrylic yarn is actually spun plastic which shrinks when dried. If it is natural fibers, you will be able to have it blocked. Blocking is a method where the finished product is stretched out on a board while it is wet and secured down. It is then dried in that shape, once removed maintaining it’s shape.

you might try to wet it and lay it on a table and slowly stretch it all the way around and put something on ends to keep it from tightening up again, or take it to a cleaner’s and ask them to steam stretch it .
